Hi – I am expecting #3 soon….I would like to avoid a minivan or giant SUV if possible and am hoping for a mid-sized SUV. We currently have a 2000 Lexus SUV and it doesn't fit the 3 across.
Stats about what we have – a four year old girl and a two year old boy. Both currently in Britax Roundabouts. My daughter is nearing the 40 pound mark and will be ready for a booster by the time the baby is born this summer.
So my guess is that we will have one in a booster, keep one in the Roundabout, and while we will start with the rear facing infant seat (hasn't been purchased yet – will buy the safest one out there regardless of price), my babies tend to grow fast so the baby will likely quickly go into a convertible, rear facing at first obviously and then turning around. I've been very happy with the Britax Roundabout so would probably use that again. Simplifying, I need to fit a booster and 2 Roundabouts in the back seat. I prefer not to use the 3rd row but will if I have to.
I can buy in the luxury SUV market though we tend to buy used if we are going into that level.

I personally have a Chevrolet Tahoe and could EASILY fit 3 across. I prefer to keep my kiddo harnessed past that 4 year/40lbs mark as it is one of the safest ways for a child to travel. I do have 2 Britax Regents outboard with ZERO room in the middle for another seat (I even tried a Scenera RFing…no go). Now, with 2 RA's and a booster? I bet you can get 3 across easily. We have had our Tahoe for 4 years and really enjoy it. It also has an optional 3rd row.
My advice is to purchase the next seat that you are wanting for your daughter, take the 2 RA's and put them in vehicles that you really like. I highly recommend keeping her in a harnessed seat much longer, but 4 years and 40lbs is the minimum safety standards (for recommendations, please refer to the convertible seat section of the forum).

The Graco Natilus would probably work great for your 4 yr old daughter. It harnesses to 65 pounds with 18 inch top slots. Then converts to a booster and backless booster.
Since your daughter is nearing 40 pounds, she may have outgrown the roundabout by height already—are her shoulders over the top slot…if so, she needs a new seat NOW.
Definately take the seats you will be using when purchasing a new vehicle. If you'll be using an infant seat and then a convertible…have your hubby/partner shlep it around for you. Many new cars have headrests that interfer with FF child restraints—so make sure you can actually install all the seats safely…not just set them on the seat.

Thanks so much for your advice. I really appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions.
I think my real question should be, what's the safest way that isn't outrageously large for my 40 pound daughter to travel. Should I be getting the Graco you recommended so she can be harnessed for another 25 pounds or a booster? And if it's a booster (sorry but I'm getting overwhelmed here) which one(s) get the best ratings for safety (first) and comfort (can't ignore it)…I looked at the Britax parkway and monarch but those head wings look like they would drive my daughter nuts.

I would try her out in a Parkway. IF she still falls asleep in the vehicle, you will be very glad that you have them. They are also there for side impact protection. since your vehicle doesn't have side impact airbags, these are 2nd best/safest for her. The BRitax boosters are also the tallest seats–holds up to 60" and 100+lbs. Recaro's boosters are nice and Compass B510—great booster!!!
