In Maine, a child must be in a child restraint:
- Rear Facing Child Car Seat: if younger than 1 or less than 20 pounds in a rear-facing infant seat
- 40-80 pounds and less than 8 years in a safety system that elevates the child so that an adult seat belt fits properly
An Adult safety belt is permissible for children 8 through 17 years or less than 18 years and more than 4’9″
