Our Review of the Britax Monarch booster seat

The Britax Monarch is another fine addition to the Britax family of car seats and boosters. UK based Britax is widely renowned for creating some of the highest quality convertible, infant, and booster car seats in the world – and the German designed Monarch is one of the latest and greatest additions. Both the Monarch and the Britax Parkway offer True Side Impact Protection, utilizing thick EPS foam lined side wings around the head and torso area. These provide not only side impact protection, but also the deep headrest makes a comfortable spot for your child to rest their head once they nod off.  The deep side wings cocoon the passenger in an impact reducing shell. The back of the Monarch is removable and the belt threading positions are color-coded to reduce the potential for improper use.

What are the Difference between the Monarch and Britax Parkway?

The Monarch Has:

  • Expanding padded armrests
  • Same weight, height, and weight capacity
  • Option to be a backless booster
  • More side impact protection for torso
    • The Parkway loses some of its side impact protection when the headrest is raised, while to Monarch has high side-wings that protect all the way to the shoulder

The comfort factor on the Monarch is significant as well; with a triple layer of padding in the seat area and easily removed, machine washable plush fabrics. The headrest itself is adjustable with just one hand, and the seat can accommodate children from 30-60? or 30-100lbs. The padded armrests expand away from each other, creating space for bigger passengers that may need a wider seating area. There are also retractable cupholders (which the kids love) are in place on either side of the base. The Monarch is just the latest addition to the Britax family, and it proves once again why Britax is at the upper echelon of car seat comfort and safety.

When they outgrow the Roundabout, buy this!

After using one for half a year, we're very pleased with the Monarch for its comfort and protection. When you stand back and look at the seat from outside the car, you get the impression that the Monarch is ready for pretty much anything including aerial combat. With the wings wrapping around the head and torso (great feature!), the child looks as snug in there as a fighter pilot -- and isn't that pretty much the right idea? Contrary to some other reviews, the seat is NOT too large for a normal car, since I have one on the left side of my Honda Civic, with a Britax Roundabout on the right side. Visibility is fine -- our 4 y.o. son doesn't complain about the wings at all (and obviously I love them). We also have a Britax Regent (huge 5-point seat) for the same child in a different car, and comparing the two, I'd say the Monarch is just as protective and plush as the Regent, more compact, easier to nap in, and over $100 less. Did I mention the boy loves it? A top-quality piece of safety equipment at a decent price, considering what you get.

This seat is terrific for my 3 1/2 year old son. He has been in his old harness seat since he was 6 months old and this is now his big boy car seat. The wings around his head are not obstructive and when he falls asleep in the car, his head does not fall over. He can climb into and out of the seat on his own with minimal effort. I highly recommend this seat for the features and value!

I love this booster seat.We just got it today. It was easy to put together and to get it in the car. My son is about to turn 4 and I was worried he wouldn't like the wings. Well we were in the car for all of 5 minutes and he fell asleep. He said those were his pillows. He loves his new big boy seat and so do we. Thank you so much for a wonderful website. We are so happy with the Britax Monarch.

Great booster - very comfy!

I bought this for my 5-year old daughter and she fell in love with it the minute I took it out of the box. She loved how she could snuggle into it and rest her head. She loved how soft and cushiony the material and seat were. No problems fitting into a Honda Accord. We had previously purchased a different booster from the local baby store but neither of us was happy with it, so I tried this one and we both loved it. I took the other one back and bought a second Monarch. As a bonus, she loves the name "Monarch" as it is her favorite butterfly (like the head cradle style on the booster - they look like butterfly wings).

LOVE IT!!!

I Love this booster! I bought it for my daughter to replace her Recaro Sport booster. She loves the armrests, cup holders, and the plush fabric. Also the pink color was a big hit. It is a little on the wide side and b/c our van seats 7, and we have four carseats/boosters in the back, this larger booster makes it impossible to have a friend drive with us, as another booster just will not fit inbetween this booster and my son's Parkway. But overall, I love the the features it offers and the safety of it. My son is now very green with envy and wants one like hers...so we may be getting another. Overall, great booster!

My son loves his new booster seat. He's almost outgrown his marathon, and baby 3 is on the way. We decided to get it early for our other car. He is very comfortable and the side wings are not a problem for him.

I've tried them all. And by far, hands down, these are the best. I wouldn't put my toddlers in any others. They're heavier than some, but easy to assemble, take apart, clean, store ... and the children AT LAST fall asleep in the car. They're also built like tanks. The extra cost is worth it in this instance.

Very Comfortable

Reviewer: Ellen , Rochester, MN Date: March 11, 2008
I purchased this carseat for my 7yo basically to get him to the point of not needing a booster at which point my 3yo could move in to it. Positives: very comfortable, easy to sleep in, fits big kids. Negatives: Its huge, almost too big for a car (we have it in our chrysler minivan). The head wings make my 7yo feel like his head is in a helmet.
