Serious shortcomings
2 stars
Reviewer: Anonymous , Chicago, Illinois Date: March 19, 2011
OK, I’m not impressed. At all. This seat has some serious shortcomings that could and should have been easily avoided in the design, testing and manufacturing stages.
Pros: – Side impact protection (which was the main reason we bought this).
- Integration with the Peg Perego lines of strollers, old and new.
- Cosmetic appearance.
Cons: – Heavy as all heck. Can’t wait to see how this will work when our child breaks the 25 pound mark…
- Sun shade is next to impossible to position. Doesn’t come close to providing enough coverage.
- Detachment from the base extremely problematic and difficult. Seems like you have to pull on the release handle “just right” to get the clasping mechanism to open to release the seat. Rarely do I get it on the first try. THIS HAS NOT IMPROVED/EASED AFTER 6 MONTHS OF USE.
- Changing the carrying handle position is virtually impossible. I don’t even bother trying to adjust it anymore, which is presumably a hazard when driving, but what can I do? Again, THIS HAS NOT IMPROVED/EASED AFTER 6 MONTHS OF USE.
And because of the latter two problems, I pray that neither I nor anyone else will ever have to get my child out of the car quickly following an accident or the like. The reason the item gets two stars is that the side impact protection is one of the better designs out there, and the cosmetic appearance of the seat is very nice. The functionality with the strollers is nice, but who cares considering the other problems. Recaro needs to step up to the plate and manufacture an infant seat, because this one just doesn’t cut it.

I love my baby’s Peg carseat. She just turned 1, and I’m having a hard time giving it up! It’s really good looking, and she sleeps fabulously in it–even now. It’s a little heavier than some other carriers as reviews have noted but check out the specs–for the seat without base, it’s only a difference of about 1 to 2 lbs from most others. To me that weight speaks to the sturdiness and means better comfort and protection for my baby, so I’m all for it. What’s an extra 2 lbs when you’re talking about carrying a 20 lb baby in it anyway?!
Highly recommend!

We bought this seat for our son before he was born, and from the minute we got it, we just loved it because it was so pretty! The quality was evident right away.
It easily fit our son at birth (10 pounds), and when we were putting him in it to take home from the birth center, our midwife took a good look at our car seat, and was so pleased with it that she bought one for her grandchild the following week. She told us that most car seats are not as easily adjustable nor have as much head support as the Primo Viaggio. Upon further inspection, I’ve found this to be true, especially about the head support. The Primo Viaggio truly cannot be beaten in this area in my opinion.
This seat is comfortable and safe. Our son rode in it when we moved cross country when he was two months old. This seat functioned exceptionally well on that long drive. It installed equally well in my husband’s old F150 as it did in my new HHR. It also snaps easily into our Peg Perego Aria stroller for use as a travel system, which is handy for if we stopped somewhere while our son was asleep, and did not want to wake him.
When our son outgrew it, we ended up loaning it to a friend who had been using a cheaper seat for her baby (and that seat broke, which is why we loaned her ours) and she was astounded by the quality of the Primo Viaggio compared to what she’d used in the past. She used it until her baby outgrew it. Our seat has now been used for two babies, and it still looks new!
This is a top quality seat. The installation is very simple. The adjustment is simple. The use of it is simple. There is nothing I don’t like about this seat. We will be using ours again for our next baby (we have a few years left before it expires) and if for some reason we couldn’t, we’d buy another. Once you use the Primo Viaggio, there is no other infant seat.

We have been using this car seat for the last 10 months. The seat is easy to use, cleans well, and looks great. Our daughter is very comfortable in the seat and falls asleep easily. The straps and height effortlessly adjust even with one hand. Yes the seat is heavy but I cannot complain knowing my daughter is safe. We also purchased the Valco runabout with the car seat attachment and the Viaggio fits wonderfully in it. The only con I can think of is the price and while it is a bit much it is worth having peace of mind that my daughter is safe in the car.
Great Car Seat!

We’ve been using this car seat for over 8 mths. We researched the safest car seats and this one was on the top of the list with the side impact protection. Yes, it is heavier, however, it’s because of the safety technology. We feel much better knowing that our child is riding in a safe car seat that happens to be heavier, as opposed to a car seat that does not offer the SIP 30/30 and happens to be lighter. We also purchased the skate stroller which allows us to just snap the car seat into the stroller attachment without disturbing our son. It also gets high marks for style! Our only complaint would be that Peg doesn’t offer car seats for toddlers.
Its All About Safety

This car seat holds upto a 30 inch or 30 lb baby, therefore logic will tell you that this is going to be a big infant car seat / carrier. My son has always been in the 95% and he was in it until he was 13months old. When you buy a car seat, its about the safety and comfort of your infant, not of you. This carseat’s fabric is great, we live in Miami and this car seat isn’t any warmer then the others but does look very luxurious and very plush, without being made of velvet or microsuede which is very warm. Not the easiest to strap in but combined with the Peg Perego Pliko 3 its great. Plus if you read the description it tells you how much the seat weighs, so you can’t complain about it. Most infant car seat only go upto 22 lbs, so they are smaller and weigh less and you outgrow it sooner.
Heavy and huge!

Title says it all – this thing is extremely heavy and bulky. Forget about it if you have a smaller sedan – it only fits well into a SUV or minivan (I have a 3-series BMW and it doesn’t fit). It gets an A+ for looks, but a C- for utility.

I have been using this seat for almost 3 months and am now shopping for a new one. This seat is WAY to heavy and bulky! My son is only 13lbs, I can’t imagine trying to carry him in it when he is at or around 30lbs! My other complaint is how much he sweats in it. He is soaked after 10 minutes… To the point he seems to dislike car rides because he’s so uncomfortable. On the plus side, this car seat is very attractive, I have had numerous compliments. = 1 star Safety = 2 stars
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP infant Seat – Great!

We loved ours. Easy to strap the baby in and worked well with bases we had in each car. I didn’t notice the weight, but I am male. We also purchased the Peg Perego Pliko 3 which was a life saver. I could take the baby out of the car and drop it into the stroller without having to wake them up and get my grocery shopping done. It was a sad day when baby outgrew the infant carrier.

The limited edition ‘Paloma’ cars seat was very impressive. It does appear substantially larger than the regular Primo Viaggio (which I previously owned and LOVED), however it really was no different for me to carry around and transport. I loved the ivory leather accents rather than the fabric. I was also very impressed with the additional side impact support offered. I will definitely need a snuzzler until my newborn grows a little, but it is worth it because my babies are very large and chubby…the smaller version of the car seat was too cramped and caused them to sweat. This one has a very light support around the baby that breathes much more than the older models did. Great seat! Worth the extra $.
The perfect infant seat!

I purchased this seat for our second child, replacing an out-of-date Graco Snugride. I could not be more pleased with this product. It combines the best advances in safety with a stylish design. My newborn sleeps the whole time she is in it. The latch base is very easy to install, with push-button release latch connectors similar to Britax, and has an adjustable “foot” attachemnt for leveling, so no more rolled towels or pool noodles are necessary. I also like that the leveler is built into the base instead of the seat, so you know the seat will be positioned right on the first try. The five position strap height adjuster means that it fits her just right even as a newborn. Another major factor in my decision to buy this seat was the side impact protection, a feature I have not seen on other seats. The carrier snaps in and out of the base easily. I am very happy and would definitely purchase this product again.

First of all, it would get 5 stars for the saftey rating. Great saftey features! However, my biggest issue was how straight up it sat when installed in the base. My son’s head would always fall down or to one side. When installed in the stroller, you can choose to have it sitting upright or in more of a reclined position, which is nice. I went through MANY head supports trying to find one that would support his head. The only one that would work was the pads that went over the straps themselves. There is no room for pads that go completely around the head due to the side impact pads. The system is heavy, especially if you have a “big boy” like I do (18.5 lbs at 3.5 months) The carrier is not as easy to carry as the handles that are curved. I have to carry this seat in front of me in the crease of my elbow, and I am 5’6″. My mom (5′ ) cannot hardly carry at all. The bases are nice, pricy but worth it! Just pop out of one vehicle into the other. The travel system is great. Overall, I would buy again, but hopefully they will make some adjustments, such as a little more of a recline feature.
Bulky and heavy

PROS: This is a safe, attractive and easy-to use car seat. Only Graco and Chicco had comparable safety ratings (based on the flawed, but more rigourous, 2007 Consumer Reports testing), but it’s way more stylish than any Graco car seat. It’s easy to install, and the height of the shoulder straps is easy to adjust. CONS: It’s heavy, bulky, too wide to fit into an overturned wooden restaurant high chair, has a tiny sun shade, and is more expensive than Graco or Chicco. It’s a tight squeeze through the backseat doorway of most cars when the handle is in the carry position. Also, the seat in front of it must be adjusted pretty far forward for it to fit. (We know because we took it with us car shopping.) Overall, I’d recommend this car seat if you have a big checkbook, big muscles, a big car and a need for style. Otherwise, I’d go with Chicco (especially since they now have a keyfit 30 that goes up to 30 lbs.) or Graco (now that they’ve introduced some less objectionable fabric patterns).

I’ve been using the Primo Viaggio SIP seat for 10 months now, and my daughter loves it! She falls asleep easily, likes sitting in it when we are in the car or in her stroller. I feel she is very safe in it, and it attaches very easily to the Pliko P3 stroller. I’ve used it on the airplane and it fits very well, easy to install and great to be able to use it without the base. I would buy another one without a doubt.

This car seat is now on our 3rd child and we couldn’t be happier. Yes, it is heavy, but it is also extremly sturdy and others have commented that they can’t believe that it’s already been through 2 other children. Even the fabric has held up extremely well. The kids have all been happy in the seat, which makes a happy Mom & Dad. I don’t mind the weight of the seat, as I enjoy getting the mild “workout” especially when having to take off the baby weight. We recommend it to anyone…it’s well worth the money!

We love this car seat! My husband and I did extensive research when our little girl was “en route” and decided to purchase this seat along with the Venezia stroller. We couldn’t be happier with the travel system. When the seat is attached in the car via the LATCH system it is firmly secure. The adjustable side impact protection is great as it grows with your munchkin and provides extra support. The seat snaps in and out of the car easily and is so convenient when used with a stroller that allows the seat to snap in it, as well (such as the Venezia). Moreover, it is easy to take the car seat apart to clean. We had a mishap where pancake batter (don’t ask) spilled all over the seat while at a friend’s house and we were able to disassemble the seat, wash it and reassemble it within a two hour time frame. Not only did the car seat come out looking as good as new, but we were able to disassemble and reassemble without any instructions – that’s my kind of product! We drove over 4000 miles this summer and wouldn’t have wanted our little girl in anything else. It is definitely worth the extra money.
Pretty Good…

Our 8 month old son has been in this seat since he came home from the hospital, and we have put A LOT of miles on it. My husband and I are biologists and drove to Panama (yes, the country) with our then three-month-old son in February. He was happy and safe the whole time, and I was even able to sit in the back seat and feed him from a bottle when it was unsafe to stop for feedings. Overall, we felt entirely safe driving through crazy Latin America with our baby boy in this seat. That said, I must say that my son sweats like a madman when he’s in the seat, even with the air turned on full blast. Also, the straps are sometimes a little wierd with adjustment. That is they will be tight on one side and loose on the other. I found that I can properly adjust them by reaching around the back, however. Still, it’s a pain in the bum. Lastly, right after our son was born, Consumer Reports came out with that now infamous review of car seats that was eventually discredited, I believe, because their testing speed exceeded the governmental crash test ratings by 40 mph. Initially, we FREAKED OUT, considering we’d just plonked down $250. However, ignoring that this test has been discredited, the seat failed only when attached via the LATCH system. If you read the actual report, you will see that it passed (at 70 mph) when attached by the seat belt. So, we just attached it that way, which is very easy and I have no problem moving the whole seat from car to car if need be. It is heavy, but big deal. Overall, a winner and will be used with our second son due in November.

The only reason I am giving the seat 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the weight of the seat, it is HEAVY. I was able to install this seat in the middle seat without compromising any room up front. I was also able to install the seat in 5 minutes when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant. I had it checked by a technician and he said I did a great job and that he likes this seat. It DOES NOT budge when installed correctly. The LATCH makes it very simple to remove and re-install. My daughter was very comfortable in her seat and I loved that it was so easy to snap off the base and into the Pliko P3 stroller. Never has there been an easier seat to take in and out of the car. The winter cover is great, so much better than struggling with blankets that always blow off. I never used any of the strap pads, as my daughter seemed fine without them. The straps never got twisted, and it was always very easy to buckle her in. The tighten/release operation for the straps is very smooth and easy. I am also very happy to say that on top of everything else the seat looks cool! I got the pink one, it is sufficiently girly without being “babyish” looking. My daughter is very tall and has finally outgrown it (at just a bit over 6 months). I am very sorry to see it go, I do just love it. I am replacing it with a Britax Decathlon, and sincerely hope I like that one even half as much as this one.
