Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Car Seat Description

The Maxi Cosi Mico Infant Car Seat has been the European parent’s baby seat of choice for years. Word travels fast these days, and American moms and dads have been on the hunt for light and low-profile Maxi Cosi car seats too.

World-renowned Maxi Cosi infant car seats, convertible seats, and boosters were untested and unavailable here in the States. Today, Maxi-Cosi car seats are certified safe, passing US FMVSS 213 standards, and available right here at EliteCarSeats.com.

  • The Maxi-Cosi Cabrio infant car seat is the European version of the Mico
  • After a few minor changes and NHTSA Certification, Maxi-Cosi named the North American version of their infant car seat the “Mico”

Safety Comes First with the Mico

The Maxi Cosi Mico is a safe and thoroughly tested infant carseat that surpasses all NHTSA safety standards. Lined with impact absorbing EPP foam and equipped with thickly padded, deep side wings in the seat area, the Mico secures and protects babies from 5 to 22 lbs. The Mico’s weighted base installs in a rear-facing configuration with LATCH connectors, but you can also install the carseat using only your vehicle’s safety belts and the carrier’s special belt guides.

The Maxi Cosi Mico has a very narrow profile and a sleek ergonomic design, making it extra easy to get in, out, and tote. Taking the Mico carrier out of its weighted base is easy, and there is a special indicator on the base (green for go, red for no) that tells you if the seat is locked into the base properly.

Comfort is Part of the Package

For newborn babies, the Mico comes with a plush insert that keeps their head stable during a car ride, and well padded harness straps. Most infant car seat carriers have a bulky retractable sun canopy that can get in the way. The Mico, on the other hand, has an elastic canopy that tucks away neatly behind the seat and attaches to the carrier handle when the sun is out and baby needs some shade.

For your convenience, the carrier’s handle retracts to multiple positions, and the shoulder straps adjust to four different heights to accommodate a boy or girl from 19″ to 29″. Thanks to a simple harness adjustment system at the front of the seat, its easy to get the perfect fit every time you sit your baby, safe and sound, into the Maxi Cosi Mico infant carseat.

The Mico is compatible with the following strollers:

The Maxi Cosi Mico is compatible with the Maxi Cosi Perle Stroller. The Perle is a lightweight umbrella stroller, ideal for travel, and even more so when you add the Mico infant car system for it to become a baby travel system.

The Maxi Cosi Mico is part of our newest European travel system. By combining the Mico with the compatible Quinny Buzz or Quinny Zapp stroller (also brand-new to the U.S.) you will definitely have the most unique car seat / stroller combo in the neighborhood. The Mico snaps right into either of these strollers, replacing the standard seat. You can simply set the stroller seat aside for later when your son or daughter has outgrown the Mico.

In addition to their rare look, Quinny strollers are some of the lightest and tightest folding baby strollers to ever land on American shores. The Buzz has a one-of-a-kind automatic unfolding mechanism, and the Zapp has the smallest folded dimensions of any stroller in the world.

We bought the Maxi Cosi infant car seat and love it. Our son had reflux and spent all day in his Mico. In the house, it was a great way for us to keep him elevated while he played with rattles or napped. We took him everywhere in it. Once you get the hang of it, attaching to and removing from the car seat base is quick and easy. Our son is on the smaller side, so we are still using it and he is 11 months. The choco mint color is really great. And my son looks so comfortable when he is strapped in. Very happy with purchase!

Very disappointing — back to the Snug Ride!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Greenwich, CT Date: February 08, 2011
For our first two boys, we had the Graco Snug Ride. This time around, we thought let’s try something different and bought the Maxi-Cosi Mico. What a disappointment it has been. It is much narrower on the inside than the Snug Ride, and even at one month it was crunching our third son’s shoulders. The sternum buckle on the shoulder straps requires you to push in towards the baby’s chest (vs the clip on the Snug Ride where you squeeze on the sides). The seat itself proved to be much thinner than the Snug Ride’s nice foam, and is actually kind of hard and uncomfortable to the touch. Snapping in and out of the car seat base is much more difficult as well. Lastly, we have a Bugaboo, and the adapter for the Mico is a national nightmare. (The Snug Ride adapter couldn’t be easier.) It is two rods that go up separately, and detaching it from the car seat requires jerking the seat hard — not your first choice with an infant in it. And beware if you put the seat on backwards, the adapter locks on and it took us an hour to get it free (and almost broke the plastic — and we are generally VERY good with handling and setting up baby gear). The end result? At two months, we have purchased a new Snug Ride, and are saying goodbye Mico.

Our daughter is 4 months old and, prior to her arrival, I did a great deal of research regarding car seats and at 4 months in, we remain pleased with our choice. We love the safety of the seat, the harness is a breeze, the insert was great for a few months, the straps adjust easily, and it’s fairly lightweight. We did have some trouble, in the beginning, get the seat to snap into the base with great ease but we are pros now and it “snaps” in loudly. (Remember to pull the front release out first). We also have the Perle stroller and they work great together. Once again, there is a bit of a learning curve when attaching the seat to the stroller but is not a problem. We recommend the Mico to all of our expecting friends!

The seat is very nice but the canopy is flimsy and doesn`t stay up. It would be nice if Maxi-Cosi could put some type of locking device for the canopy in the up as well as down position. Other than the canopy issue, the seat is great! Now for the base. It`s very simple to attach to the latch system in my vehicle, but the front of the base (behind front seat) doen`t feel sturdy even when the latch is attached. It would be nice if there was some kind of attachment for the front of the base. Why do the European bases have a support bar and the US models don`t?

    higher weight limit

The carseat is nice, but after working with many infants, It should go up to higher weight like 30 to 35 lbs. 30lbs would be the best. Considering after a while people don’t want to alaways carry a child at a higher weight. But considering the price, and the need for most babies to past 22lbs before one year of age. They should really consider changing this. Since infants are supposed to be rear facing for one year atleast. Alsothis is supposed to be a good brand, like Chicco and Peg Perego whos seat weight limit go higher.

Although the Maxi Cosi seat is great and with the Quinny stroller, I am UNIMPRESSED with the CAR BASE and the bonnet. Considering how much it costs, it seems rather flimsy. Firstly, we have a very average family sized Nissan, yet the car base is too long for the seat. Secondly, once installed (by the very experienced retailer), it seemed loose and insecure. Finally, I was really unhappy with the fact that the actual bonnet of the seat ended up tearing at the bottom, leaving the rod that created the shape of the bonnet saggy and difficult to use. I see that Maxi Cosi has fixed this in their newer models. I am disappointed as I was expecting much more from a Maxi Cosi product.

Maxi Cosi listened to what parents were saying! We just got our Lily pink 2010 carseat and we are in love. The buckle is now like a graco snugride so it’s much easier to use, the sunshade stays put and getting the seat in and out of the base is so easy. This is our 3rd baby and have used several other infant seat including the Peg Perego and Combi this seat is by far the best infant carseat we have owned. Safe, Stylish and lightweight you really can’t go wrong. I wish it had a higher weight limit but our children are not big kids so I should be able to use this for atleast 10 or 11 months.

I have the mico Maxi Cosi infant car seat and am not impressed.. bought it thinking it would be good considering it was a bit on the expensive side and seems to be rated good. it is very hard to get the car seat clicked into the base and i am sometimes unsure if it is actually in right. you have to pull hard on the pull handle and the handle on the base feels like it is gonna break! also, it does not fit into a shopping cart which is very inconvenient means i have 3 kids and cant always leave them with my husband ! So i bought the stroller and am not impressed with that either! hard to get it to go in the car seat adapters. i would not recommend either the stroller or car seat to anyone!

Thank you so much for taking time to share your experience with the Maxi-Cosi Mico with us. We’re sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing. We contacted Maxi-Cosi in regards to these issues, and here is what they had to say:

Our attachment method is different than other infant car seats on the market. In our instructions on pages 41 & 42 we outline the process of making sure the base release handle is pulled all the way out. A label was added to the base outlining this step. As you know infant car seats are not meant for use on a shopping cart. We feel this is unsafe and don’t recommend it. Our stroller adapters need to be in the proper position in order to properly attach to the stroller.

    I hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

We really love this car seat for our son. We have had no trouble at all getting it to snap into and out of the base. It’s so simple and easy. We have used it with ease in other cars using the seat belts and we have even brought it with us on a few airplane flights. No complaints at all. We purchased the clips to use it with our EasyWalker Sky stroller and it has been so easy to use. They loose one star because the head support cushion was definitely too long. We had to remove it when our son was about three months old because it was crowding his shoulders.

AS a new mom, I really didn’t know what to expect, but I did my research and made the best decision regarding price, safety and style, and this carseat met all those qualifications. I like the color and I like that it matches the Foray stroller I have. I have a VERY small car and the carset fits snug. The only issue I had was clicking and securing the seat into the base and the fact that it will not fit on top of the shopping carts. Overall, it’s a good carset carrier and you just have to use it a few times before you get the hang of it.

The reason I got this car seat was because it came with the Quinny Buzz stroller. I love the color (orange) and my daughter seems to find it comfortable. As I discovered on my first trip to the grocery store, I was unable to latch it to the cart. But doing that makes me nervous anyway and I’d rather put the car seat inside the cart. My only complaint is that the sunshade won’t stay forward. It keeps creeping backwards.

The mico is snappy-looking, lightweight, and seems comfortable for babies. That’s about all the positives I can come up with. 1. It doesn’t go easily into or out of the base. It takes quite a bit of messing with it to figure out the trick to get it to lock in correctly and if you don’t know any better, it might not be locking in at all. Getting it out can be just as troublesome as the release doesn’t always pull all the way out when you remove the seat. The buckle system is common on a lot of seats now, but it too is a pain. It doesn’t sit on a shopping cart safely. That’s a major minus if you ask me. They gave no consideration when designing the seat to how it would be used outside the car it seems. There is no safe way to put it on a shopping cart unless you stuff it in the large end, which kind of defeats the purpose of the cart. I bought an adapter for it to attach to my stroller. Couldn’t get the seat to grab that either. This seat is big bucks and delivers little.

    Comments from The Staff:

We’re so sorry to hear about your disappointment with your Maxi-Cosi Mico. We wanted to take this opportunity to respond to a couple of your concerns.

First, regarding the the use of the Mico with shopping carts, I know it can be inconvenient, however we support the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) recommendations against such uses. For some alternative options or to read their full press release regarding safe shopping cart use click here.

In regards to your stroller adapter, we would love some more information from you on this. If you purchased an adapter that specifically stated it was compatible with the Maxi-Cosi Mico, the manufacturer of the adapter should be notified of incompatibility. With these cases it is the stroller company’s responsibility to test compatibility with infant car seats if they are selling the adapter to work with specific infant car seat models. It is only the car seat manufacturer’s responsibility if they manufactured the stroller and/or adapter in question. Either way, if you could provide us the necessary information we would be happy to assist you in figuring out the appropriate steps to take to solve this problem.

Lastly, regarding your ease of use concerns we contacted Maxi-Cosi and they made us aware of an announcement they released addressing just this concern. You can read their announcement in its entirety below.

Please feel free to contact us to arrange for a return or if you have any further questions we can help you with.

Overall we had a great experience with our Mico and especially loved the fact that it fit into our Foray stroller – awesome for the first few months. However, the harness and clips took some getting used-to, and the sun-shade became loose and would not stay up over time; it also wasn’t deep enough to really keep the sun off our daughter’s face. The other disadvantage was that the carry handle was hard to use in comparison to some other, more popular brands like Graco. Because it is cylindrical vs. flat, it was hard to hook on your arm and the bulkier profile meant carrying the seat by your leg/hip resulted in lots of bumping around. All this said, we looked at our friends’ car seats and could tell that they did not provide as much side-impact protection and so this made us feel good.

We’ve been extremely happy with our Maxi Cosi. We never minded the way the clip/harness worked. No problems here! I love how light it is, and I love the colors. The seat is easy to remove and wash. My only complaint is that on one seat (we have twins) we had the problem with the seat not clicking into the base. However, we always shook the seats as precaution to make sure everything was tight. Its really not an issue.

After reading the reviews, I tend to agree with most of them. My son was born on April 28, 2009 and have been using the car seat and the Maxi Cosi stroller for 2 months now. My son LOVES the seat, he is very comfortable and goes to sleep before I even get him into the stroller for a walk or get the car moving! He is snug although the head support is a little long and his shoulders get squished, but i’m okay with that.
    The issues I have are:
    1. the base locking without the car seat in it
    2. the car seat not locking in completely until i’m driving, then i hear the click
    3. removing the car seat from the base is sometimes difficult too (but only for one base, the other base is fine).
    4. the leg straps were putting lines on my sons legs, but i realized we can adjust and since then it’s been perfect
    5. the puzzle piece buckle was difficult to use but you do get used to it (can’t have long nails though)
    6. the sunshade is flimsy and keeps falling down – doens’t click into place
    7. the straps do get twisted and are difficult to fix (not good when pressed for time).
    8. the hood seems to be fraying where it hits the seats in front
    9. front seats must be up toward the dashboard in order to fit (small cars not good).

Overall i really like it and the stroller is great. I was surprised to see so many people using the Quinny and not the Maxi stroller.

We went through several car seats from Britax, Peg Perego and Combi before buying our Mico. She was most comfortable in the Mico and we liked its design best. We never had any issues with buckle system, in fact that is one the products endearing features, very easy and quick to use without any fiddling around. Safety wise it is one of the best on the market, highly recommended.

Our son is now 11 months and he still uses his Mico, he’ll still fall asleep in it and he seems to be very comfortable. I see some people have problems with the buckle; I’ve never thought of this as a problem, and I like the way the straps keep him snug and secure in the seat. I’ve seen other car seats where babies almost hang forward with their head bouncing all over the place. If you want what’s best for your baby, get this seat!!

Just wanted to let people know that you can change the buckle setting from infant to toddler to allow more room for the legs. My son is 4 months old and I was going to buy a convertable seat because I could no longer buckle over his legs on the loosest setting. Then I read that you can change the buckle position and it is so easy, just pull belt clip through front and move it to next slot. Now there is plenty of room for his chubby legs.

I live in Canada and bought the first shipment literally in April 2008. We were originally very happy with it, as the straps are not as long and loose as some other infant car seats out there, but baby was happy and the inserts made him nice and comfy. No problems with the baby, he loves it, and can sleep and endure long rides in it no problem. The only problem is like other reviewers state, the base does not always fully click into the seat. After a month of this I contacted Droel Group and surprisingly they offered to replace the full unit which made me quite happy. However, having the 2nd base now has the same problem and I have not called them again about it. Glad that other people are having the same issue and I’m not crazy, though this is a safety concern for me as many times I check to make sure by shaking the seat (which the baby does not enjoy, but what else can I do) to ensure all the locks have taken just to start driving and the last one clicks during the car ride. Does not make me a happy camper to second guess the thing all the time. We want to put in our convertible car seat now, but need the infant car seat to connect to our mutsy stroller since baby is not big enough for the toddler seat yet. All in all, my only concern is the safety of this product, and since its been replaced once and it has not rectified the issue, I’m reluctant to constantly contact the company just to get a replacement with the same issues. Looks a lot cooler than most infant car seats out there, but would you compromise the safety? I will probably buy something else out there when I have my 2nd babe or buy a few spare bases

Why You should purchase this car seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Mountain View, CA Date: September 16, 2008
I have read through the previous reviews and feel compelled to offer what I hope is an objective review of the seat because previous reviews criticize the seat for what seems to me to be subjective opinions. So here goes. Pros to the seat: 1) Safety. It is the safest car seat for infants on the market. US Consumer Products reviews are terrible so don’t bother trying to find anything there. But the German Consumer Products reviews rated this seat as #1. The EU has tougher car seat testing standards than we have in the US (shouldn’t we be upset about this?), including side-impact tests. 2) Style – not a reason to buy something this important, but it doesn’t hurt. The colors are cool. Now for the completely subjective part: the thing just looks so much cooler than the US made seats/stroller combinations, not just because of the colors but because of the design in general. 3) Baby sits snug – some parents seem to have found their baby is too ‘tight’ in the seat, which surprised me. Don’ t you want your baby to sit snug in the car seat? I’m surprised to see the way some parents strap their babies in the car seats – loosely, too loosely in my opinion. And if the baby has tons of head room, that means that the baby’s head can get hurt if there is an accident! Cons: 1) Straps are difficult to loosen (the straps were tricky to connect, but after a few times, we got the hang of it and it is no problem; however, pulling the straps loose is still difficult) 2) seat does not always latch in properly to the base. We feel comfortable with it as long as we double check it each time. 3) Fit with the Quinny Buzz – removing the car seat from the Quinny is tricky. The engineering department could improve on the design in my opinion. Now on to a few subjective observations – My baby slept like a doll in the car seat. He felt secure and snug and comfortable. I think the babies who didn’t sleep well probably wouldn’t have enjoyed any car seat! – I guess that’s it!

I read many reviews where parents said the same thing – the baby was unhappy, seemed buckled in too tightly and the buckle seemed to squeeze their thighs. I even tried to reach the company for suggestions but no luck. I was ready to return the seat when my husband decided to change the center buckle setting from the infant setting to the toddler (further out) setting. It’s totally counter intuitive because you think that by changing it you’ll make the problem worse but suddenly my daughter was a happy camper. She stopped crying and slept well in the seat. Hooray! We also had to take out all inserts, shoulder pads and adjust the shoulder straps to a higher setting. It’s as though their infant settings are just way too small for an infant. So as an fyi – adjust EVERYTHING and it will be great.

We’ve had our mico now for about 2 months and like it. The center buckle is a bit cumbersome at times but once you get used to it, its not so bad. Our seat snaps into the base so easily I was surprised to read about everyone else’s difficulty. The thing we didn’t realize was that this seat does not fit with any snap-n-go out there yet. It is a little tricky to fit with the bugaboo. (The bugaboo is a bit tricky folding and unfolding to begin with.) We just got a Quinny Zapp and it fits perfectly. The sunshade is a bit short but we have an accessory to cover the rest of the seat. Our daughter likes her car seat and sleeps in it no problem.

Great seat…just takes some getting used to!

I agree with some of the concerns that others have posted about the Maxi Cosi Mico, but have found it to be a great seat overall. We purchased this seat as it was compatible with the Quinny Buzz stroller. It has been extremely comfortable for my now 5 month old…I like the head support and the colors available. I agree that the center buckle was very hard to latch at the beginning, but once we loosened up the straps (very easy to do with the one touch button) and got some practice, it can now be done with ease. I agree though, that if you lived in a colder climate where the baby was bundled up more, it might be difficult (we live in Hawaii). Also, the sunshade is much too small and we had to purchase the Kiddopotomus sunshade attachment (which works great). We have had no problems snapping it in and out of it’s base…very easy and just takes a moment to pull out. Overall, we would recommend it to others.

We love this carseat…be have two carseats, the maxi-cosi mico and a babytrend carseat. Our son has always been very comfortable in the Maxi-cosi even on long road trips. When he was a newborn, the insert kept him very cozy and comfortable. He seemed lost in our other carseat which we had to fill extra space with receiving blankets. The maxi-cosi is light weight and easy to carry when loaded with an infant. When out of the base it has a nice rocking feature with a rubbarized bottom so it will not slip. The buckle does sit low between his legs making it a little trickier to buckle, but once we got used to it, it wasn’t a problem at all. Bottom line – I would recommend this seat. Comfortable for our son, easy to carry around, and comes in cool colors.

    Looks great- difficult to operate

After much research, we bought this car seat and the Quinny Buzz stroller to go along with it. PROS: – cute, colorful. We’ve gotten compliments on it. – lightweight. CONS: – the center latch is extremely difficult to operate. Don’t think it will loosen up after a while. It won’t. As this was our first child, we didn’t know that all carseats aren’t this difficult to fasten. – If your child is tall, this seat won’t last long. Our daughter is 4 months old and her feet are about to start hanging over the edge. I don’t know what I am going to buy for a convertible car seat, but I am not going to be sucked into buying another Maxi-Cosi seat just because of the looks. Looks don’t count for much if you can’t get your child in and out of the seat easily.

Very pleased with the car seat. Our local hospital car seat expert was also impressed. We like that it comes with the infant head roll (which means it’s been crash tested). It’s also very cute…we get lots of compliments and questions on “where did you get that car seat”. Only downfall for us is that it prevents the front seats from being moved back (we own a Honda Civic). So the person in the front seat has to sit “one with the windshield.” Great buy, fun and very safe!

We have a 6 month old who has used the maxi cozi since she was born. We all love our maxi cozi car seat! It fits easily into our car, and we’ve never had trouble getting it buckled or into and out of the base. It works perfectly with the Quinny stoller – which we also love. The one recommendation I would make is to have the visor be longer to block out more of the sun.
