Maxi-Cosi Priori Convertible Car Seat Description

With a streamlined design and plush, removable, and washable seat padding in eye-catching designs, the Maxi Cosi Priori Convertible Car Seat looks and feels unlike any other convertible seat you will find on the US market.

Maxi Cosi car seats are new to the United States, but have a long-standing reputation among European families as some of the safest, simplest, and most stylish carseats in the business. Maxi Cosi is essentially the Graco of the European market – coupling quality materials and safety features with streamlined designs that emphasize economy over flash. While affordable, Maxi Cosi car seats are the furthest thing from cheap.

The Maxi Cosi Priori is among the rare breed of car seats that protects an infant child up to 35 lbs. in a rear facing position, or a child from 22 to 40 lbs. in the forward facing position. Most car seats for infants have a max weight of 30-33 lbs. in the rear facing position. By using the LATCH attachments or your vehicle’s safety belts, the rear-facing-to-35 lbs. option makes the Priori extra safe for young passengers.

In another rare move, the Maxi Cosi Priori in its forward facing position has four recline positions that lets boys and girls up to 40 lbs. to relax on rides long or short. Few other car seats have this option. The Graco Safe Seat Step 2 also has a recline setting, but is forward facing only.

The Maxi Cosi Priori’s recline is easily adjusted with the seat still installed (no need to stop and fumble) and colored level indicators ensure that the Priori’s base is always installed at the proper angle. The colored level indicator is another of the Priori’s rare qualities, as most convertible seats do not offer one. Couple the recline settings and level indicator with the deep EPP foam lined headrest and the padded 5 point harness, and the Priori proves to be as safe as it is sleep-friendly.

Bottom Line: The Maxi Cosi Priori convertible car seat is a distinguished reversible safety seat, and EliteCarSeats.com is excited to be offering them. Light, lean, and well designed, the safety, reversibility and recline setting offered by the Priori give it a high value.

Great Seat, but a few drawbacks.
    4 stars
Reviewer: OregonMom , Oregon Date: January 04, 2011
I have posted a previous review and I am now updating my review as I have since switched to forward facing. I still love this seat with a couple drawbacks. It is very difficult to tighten the straps, if the strap pull gets off track at all it wont tighten. This gets very frustrating. Also my car does not have latch, I can still get the seat very tight, however the seat belt buckle then is too close to the inside of the car seat and you can’t sit the seat straight up, it has to be in the first recline position. This is not a problem when using latch. Other than that still a great seat, and we move ours from car to truck often. I have washed the cover a few times and it always cleans up great. The cupholder is a little flimsy as well, but still useful. My son is 2.5 and still tall for his age and still fits the seat well. Here is my previous post… I have had this seat for about a year now. My son is 21 Months and in the 95 percentile for his height and 50th for his weight. We still have him facing backwards as he is only around 25 pounds. This one can face backwards til 35 pounds. My son fits nicely in the seat, it appears comfortable and the colors are great. I got the pumpkin. I have used latch and regular belt and it takes a little practice but can get mine super tight. I have not had mine facing forward yet. I do put a towel under the base to make it level as well. It also fits in my car nicely. Some of the others were too bulky. The only downfalls of this seat is that it is hard to tighten down the straps, if you don’t pull on the strap straight the strap gets stuck in the release button. I’ve learned how to do it well, but my husband gets frustrated. The other thing is that one of my latch clips to clip the latch belts to while not in use broke off within the first couple times of using it. We switch between a car with latch and one without often. So that was a bummer, now I just stuff the belts under the seat. Overall a great seat for the size and price.

    Favorite car seat!

We LOVE our Maxi-Cosi Priori. When we were looking for convertible seats, the Priori was one of only two that would fit rear facing in our Volvo’s back seat. Two years later we still love it, and have one in each car. I was the cover (in the machine on hand wash or delicates and air dry) every 6 mons or so, and it looks great. Another big plus, it’s easy to install with the latch system, and fits into airplane seats without a struggle. Our seats have been checked as baggage numerous times, and have yet to suffer any damage as a result. Overall, we couldn’t be happier with our purchase!

    Comfortable but clumsy to use
    3 stars
Reviewer: Alleycat , San Diego, CA Date: June 12, 2010
I purchased this seat about 1½ years ago and have only used it forward facing. My daughter is now 3½. While overall this seat has been comfortable for her, she has outgrown it well before the stated height limit and I have found the seat awkward to use in a number of small but annoying ways. I haven’t seen the latest models in person so don’t know if the design has changed or not. First, my daughter is now just 40″ and 30lb. However, the top of her head is well above the top of the seat and the top harness slot is well under the top of her shoulder, which the installation tech said means she’s outgrown it. I had expected it to last another year. Second, the comfort features which had initially so impressed me compared to the Britex I had originally planned to buy (like overall cushier padding, better shoulder pads, and padded covers around the crotch buckle, as well as the recline feature) make adjustments to the seat rather user-unfriendly. For example, the crotch buckle cover gets in the way whenever I try to snap in the harness anchors, the shoulder pads somehow manage to get all askew, and the harness release button is hidden in a little hole at the front of the seat and is very awkward to reach whenever you want to tighten (push down) or loosen (pull up) the harness. Again, these issues were small but managed to annoy me every time I got her in/out, and they were never a problem on our old Chicco infant seat. On the positive side, twisty straps were never a problem. Finally, be aware that the recline feature comes with its downsides. It did recline just enough to help her go to sleep on long car rides and keep her neck more comfortable. However, the difference between the 4 point recline positions is so negligible that I only used it in either “upright” or “fully recline” mode. Compared to our other seat (Graco ComfortSport), this seat already has a fairly significant recline angle even in upright mode. An unanticipated consequence of this less upright seat is that our daughter, especially when she was smaller, found it hard to see out the side windows because she was leaning back so far. Also, it made snacking and drinking in the car a very messy proposition. As for installation, we found it to be moderately difficult to install and never could get it as tight as the local tech could. As a result, we avoided removing the seat whenever possible. The fact that the seat needed to be removed in order to re-thread the harness straps as she grew only added to this annoyance. Automatic harness adjustment is definitely a feature that I will be looking for in the new seat. Overall, we were pleased with this seat’s comfort and safety for our child, which of course are most important, but were disappointed that she outgrew it well before the stated height limit, and wish that the seat were more user-friendly without compromising the comfort and safety features.

I love the colors and the compact-ness of it. BUT…. my child is still in the “hight and weight” to fit the seat but he doesn’t fit in it well( who is not large for his age). The buckel in the “privet” area is not ajustable so it is now smashing my son. I had to give in a buy a Britax. It’s cost more and is a bit bigger but at least his bottom half now fit in the seat

I liked the seat until my twins got too tall for it. They are a little less than 30lbs and will be too tall for these soon. Other than that they have been fine, easy enough to clean and install (as easy as can be expected), safe, and comfy for the kids. I will also add that Elite Car Seats gives a twin discount when you buy two of a big ticket item.

    Good but rattles when empty

Reviewer: Ludo , Los Angeles, CA Date: August 07, 2009
We bought this car seat 1.5 years ago and we used to love it: the recline feature is easy to use and it reclines just enough for your kid to get comfortable and fall asleep. More, the colors are great compare to all other car seats available. Unfortunately, we recently changed our car which has a slightly “stiffer” ride and on every small bumps on the road now, the seat rattles when my daughter is not in it. It is pretty loud and it really starts to annoy me. It looks like, because you can slide the upper part for reclining, there is a small space between the upper and the bottom part(which may have become larger with time)then it’s enough to make it rattle. If you put something soft between the 2 parts (top and bottom), it’s getting better but you have to remove it to use the recline position when your child is seated.

I bought the frisbee blue color and installed it rear facing in my F150 King Ranch pickup. It is a full size back seat, but the captains chairs in the front can crowd the people in back. This seat fit perfectly in the center rear location and it was a more compact fit than the Peg Perego infant seat! My 5 mo old son is muchmore comfortable, he was 28 inches and 17 pounds and getting crowded in the Peg Perego. The recline on the Maxi Cosi is just right. It was very difficult for me to install – this was my first car seat installation ever. I had to read the directions twice. But I love the side impact feature, the fit in my truck, and the look. I used the strap holders every time to keep the buckles out of the way when putting JR in the seat. The straps tangle much less than the Peg Perego infant seat. I like that the lower buckles can be clicked in one side at a time instead of aligning them first to snap then in (like the Peg infant seat).

I did a lot of research before purchasing this carset. Out of all carseats available in the market this one is definitely the most stylish! Britax carseats might be more expensive, which is almost always considered “better” but they are really not: They’re bigger, bulkier and they are ugly looking. Aside from the looks, it’s a comfy carseat for my baby, he loves it. I bought this carseat over a year ago and the only con that I’ve been able to find is the seat pad! the fabric stains easily, you really need to take good care of it if you want it to last -which is not always easy with babies- and it’s not machine washable…I made that mistake the first time and when I took it out of the washing machine some parts were unstitched. Customer service kindly sent me a new pad set free of charge. About 2 months ago I decided to spot clean it as they directed, but the fabric discolored! I just ordered a new set in a darker color for about 60 bucks…

We purchased this seat for my daughter when she was about a year old and for a year it was great. But by age 2 she had pretty much outgrown it. Our other seat, a Britax Marathon, though larger, bulkier, and more expensive, is lasting us a lot longer. Those are the tradeoffs.

Highly recommended! Not only very functional, but stylish and streamlined as well. We transitioned our daughter from the Maxi-Cosi Mico infant seat to the Priori when she was 5 months old because she was getting too long for the carrier. She loves her seat and seems very comfortable in it. She’s almost one now and since she is very tall (90th percentile) she can now kick the back of the seat in my Civic. I think it will be much better when we switch her to forward facing next month and she can kick away. We liked this seat so much that we bought three – one for my car and one for my husband’s car with a third one for grandma.

I ordered this on 2/17 and I got it today! Only 3 days shipping. I just put my 7 month old (25 pound)son in and adjusted his harnesses and installed this seat myself! The only thing is I don’t have good strength in my wrists so my husband will have to tighten it down well for me. Other than that it seems to fit well and was easy to install. I did put a towel under the recline bar because when it gets tightened it may not be perfectly level. My son was super happy in it and the color I picked (Frisbie) is really nice. I can buckle and unbuckle him with no problem and the harness protecters are SO soft. He has plenty of room to grow. The head wings are deep and the foam is softer than most seats with foam you can knock on. It seems like it would absorb the shock of a crash well. I am so happy I gave this seat a chance. Even though it only goes to 40 pounds. If I would have gotten one that went from 5-65 pounds, it would have expired before I want him out of a 5 point so I didn’t mind spendng the money. I highly recommend this seat and this website.

I have the Maxi Cosi Priori in my 4 door sedan. My husband has a Britax Marathon in his Tahoe. I like both car seats; however, I can not get the Priori nearly as tight in my car as my husband can get the Britax in his Tahoe. It kind of concerns me that I am not able to get the Priori completely tight with the latch system or with the seat belt. I have tried to take it out and put it in again, but have not had luck. It was fine until we turned it around front ways. Facing the rear was fine. Other than that, it seems to be a great carseat. If I had known what I know now, I probably would have purchased another Britax.

I bought the Maxi-Cosi Priori convertible car seat for my daughter who is now 13 months old. Previously we used the Combi DX car seat and compatible stroller, which fit nicely into my car after I returned that Graco monstrosity, which wouldn’t even fit into my friend’s 2005 Honda Accord! So when my daughter neared the weight and height limit for her Combi DX and it was time for a convertible car seat, I was worried about having to buy something ugly and bulky. After some internet searching I stumbled onto the elitecarseats.com website, and then found the Maxi-Cosi Priori. I read the reviews, saw that the price was pretty good, and really appricated the wide range of colors that the seat comes in…sorry, I just can’t do those ugly greys and browns, they are hidious! I decided on the Indian Spice, which is very lovely…bright fushia and orange set off by a deep green-brown color. So far, my daughter seems to love it, as she always falls asleep in it during long car rides. Also the recline feature is really nice, and it’s a cinch to reach back and recline her once she is sleeping. The Maxi-Cosi Priori can be used in cars with or without the latch system; so far I have used it only with car seatbelts, as the buckles that keep the seatbelt attached to the carseat don’t allow the seat to flop around at all. My daughter is fairly tall for her age, about 31 inches (and about 22 pounds), but she fits into the seat quite nicely even with all of her winter gear on. I anticipate that using it with the Go-Go Kidz travel wheels will make airport travel a breeze (I haven’t used them together yet).Thank you Maxi-Cosi for making a fabulous car seat!

We got this as the second car seat of our son. He is 4 months old but is in the 95th percentile for height and weight. So, we transitioned him from maxi cosi mico to this priori seat and he simply loves it. He seats on it very comfortably and very much enjoys his new vantage point of looking out the windows.

It is a great car seat as it reclines as well. We had a maxi cosi infant car seat for my daughter right from birth and all their car seats are really cool -we’ve really loved this brand.when we moved our daughter at 7 mths to this carseat( as we needed another one in the second car) she loved it but the only problem is that even though they advertise it as a seat from infancy it really is not as my duaghter’s head would sometimes fall on the side. I would highly recommend this seat for kids above 20 pounds but would not recommend for smaller kids unless used with head rest.

Perfect seat for a baby who likes to sleep in the car
    5 stars
Reviewer: Dina , Los Angeles, CA Date: October 07, 2008
I bought this convertible car seat because our baby is too big for his infant car seat and too young to be seated in forward facing position. His is 23 lbs and 30 inches at 7,5 months. We needed to have a convertible car seat that could fit in our car (Infiniti SUV) in rear facing position until he is one year old. At first, I bought Eddie Bauer convertible seat. I had to return it because it was too big for our car (nobody could fit in the front passenger seat), plus my son’s head was always falling on his chest when he would fall asleep (head rest turned out to be a minus in this seat). So, I spent hours online and finally found this car seat. It fits perfectly rear facing in our both cars (Infiniti and Prius). Even my husband can fit comfortably in the front seat with Maxi-Cosi on the back, and he is 6,5! Another major plus is that this car seat has great reclining feature in the form of an angled base that can be transferred from back to front to create even more comfortable position to fall asleep. I could not get Eddie Bauer seat to recline so much even with extra towels and swimming noodles. Another (huge) plus is VERY easy installation. It has this great latch mechanism that makes installation a breeze. I will never buy any car seat that does not have this mechanism. We almost divorced with my husband during Eddie Bauer car seat installation :) . I understand that my baby would not be able to use this seat for a long time, since he has only 10 lbs to go. However, we are thinking of having a second baby, who can use it after our son outgrows this seat and starts using bigger seat in forward facing position. In recap, I am very happy with this product and would highly recommend it. Lastly, I did not have any problems with elitecarsseats.com, and I am thinking of buying another car seat for my husband’s car from them again.

I got this seat before my son turned one, because he was reaching the weight limit on his rear-facing seat. I wanted something safe, yet still stylish. Britax seats look like Barcaloungers to me. ;-) The Priori fit well rear-facing in my 2007 Honda CRV in the middle position. It was very easy to install. It fit even better when I flipped him forward-facing after a year. He’s very happy in it. I love being able to reach back and put him in the recline position when he falls asleep. He gets it dirty pretty often, but Resolve Rug Cleaner works well and makes it look brand new. Great seat overall. I’ve had it 9 months and expect it to be very durable for several more years. I absolutely recommend it. The only slight drawback is the manual is sometimes unclear.

I don’t have experience with any other car seats but love this one. I love the fun colors; the clips on the side that hold the seat belt harness out of the way as you put the child in the car seat; haven’t used it forward facing yet but love that it reclines easily. The fabric does get stained easily by liquids. Overall, I am extremely happy with this purchase. Fantastic carseat for the price!

This is the best car seat ever!!! we kinda bought it blind becasue we couldn’t find anyone around our area that carried it to put her in to see how she liked it but it was the best buy ever. It sits up high so my daughter can look out the windows, it is so comfortable for her the second we put her in it she smiles and then falls asleep. It is so easy to install. I lvoe the recline feature and it fit in to our ford fusion so nice. there is also no bounce back from the front of the seat that most of them have in the rear facing position. I can’t say enough about this carseat it was the best purchase we ever made and well worth the money I love the strap holders too that way she doesn’t get fussy when i have to dig them out from underneath her!!!!

Our 9 month old daughter was really out growing her graco safe seat (which was supposed to last until she was 1). She is very tall and was very uncomfortable in the infant seat. She loves her new car seat and is able to fall asleep better in the car! The only down side is you can’t carry her inside in the seat, but it’s a small price to pay.

Hint* you gotta sit in the carseat (you need your weight to push it down) then snap in the LATCH. Its so secure and won’t budge unlike my infant Graco that slides left and right. Great colors and my daughter is oh so comfy in it. Cup holder is also a plus!

I purchased this seat 5 months ago and I absolutely love it! I researched alot before I purchased the Maxi Cosi and was looking at the Graco that reclined because I wanted that feature but that seat was just too bulky and then I found the Maxi Cosi and the size is just right. It fits great in my Ford Explorer. My daughter can now sleep comfortable in the seat without having her head flopped forward. This is absolutely the best seat for those naps in the car! The color choices are wonderful, I have the Indian Spice that matches the color of my car and it looks great. The only downfall is that the seat cover does stain easliy when water or baby drool falls on it, but that is the least of my worries, it can be cleaned. I highly recommend Elitecarseats.com, they were the best in customer service and super fast shipping! I had a few questions before I made my purchase and they were very prompt to respond and courteous. I will definetly do business with them again in the future.

I actually purchased my Maxi Cosi about a year ago after they were FINALLY released for sale in the US. I have been completely satisfied. I drive a Volvo S60 and had a hard time finding a car seat that would fit in the space that would allow my daughter actual leg movement :) . The reclining feature is fabulous and and husband is always trying to steal my seat for his car (he has a britax). If you are still on the fence about which car seat to purchase – your search is over.

I’m not sure if it is because we have owned 5 different car seats, so therefore we now just know what to do without looking at the directions, or maybe they updated the instruction book, but we didn’t have any problems installing or adjusting the seat… My husband did a happy dance when he saw that this seat had what he calls a “quick release LATCH hook.” I also really love the colors on this seat. It is a nice change of pace from the denims and floral prints you usually see. Since we live in the Deep South, it is often hard to find a car seat cover that doesn’t look like it would fry my child in the summer. I’m sure that once she is big enough to face forward, we are going to love the recline also. Lastly, I think that this seat sits up a little higher than most. Our daughter seems very happy and can easily interact with her sisters.

We have 2 Prioris for our twins. This is the only 2nd level carseat that IS good and LOOKS good. (I dont know why graco and britax have to make products that look like theyre from a quilting bee in 1982). Anyway, the material feels good, and the seat feels sturdy. And it has a nice cup holder on the side. The Priori also lets u clip the straps back when u take the kid out so when u put her back, she’s not sitting on them. The only thing is that the straps can get twisted as times, but that can happen on any seat.

the directions for adjusting the straps are vague – was very difficult until I realized I was doing it wrong but once I figured that out and started doing it the right way it was much easier. I also don’t like how easily the fabric gets marks on it. Drool, spit etc. who has time to take the seat all the time to clean th ewhole cover?? Not me. That Aside I love this car seat. It is very well made, my little one seems comfortable and the straps are very easy to adjust and keep in place. I recommend this seat, its well worth the price.

I love this car seat. We researched to find the safest and most reliable car seat. Graco and Evenflo among others have so many recalls I don’t trust there brand at all. This car seat is more compact then the other convertible car seats. Our car is a Mazda 3 so we need a small car seat. The manual was more difficult to comprehend then our infant car seat (Peg Perrego, which I also recommend for infant seat) but we got it after a while. We love that the seat reclines for sleeping. This was recommended to me by someone and I recommend this car seat as well.

We bought the Maxi Cosi Prior convertible seat after researching various seats at stores & on the internet. The Britax seats were alluring but they simply seemed too bulky when we looked at them in person. The Maxi Cosi seat is well made and seems solidly constructed. The multi-level incline was a plus. We still have our daughter in the rear facing position for safety purposes. The seating position seems much more comfortable compared to a Cosco seat that grandma uses. Our daughter doesn’t seem to mind being in the seat for relatively long drives. The seat was very easy to set up and install. Our cars are not large (Lexus IS & Acura TSX) and it fits without problems. The seatbelt-like LATCH system works great in comparison to the cheap hook/clips found in lower-end seats. The color scheme was pleasing to the eye, keeps cool in warm weather (we’re in southern CA) and more modern appearing than others on the market. The only complaint we have is that there’s no place for a cup-holder. We wholeheartedly recommend this car seat

    Shoulder Straps TOO SHORT!

I really liked this carseat when I first started using it, last summer, when I had a 7 month old in lightweight clothing. Now that she’s 15 months and has been wearing sweaters and winter coats, the main fault of this carseat is now VERY apparent: the shoulder harness straps are FAR TOO SHORT for kids living in cold climates! It’s a struggle to get her little arms in and out from the straps with all the winter clothing in the way. It will only get tighter as I have to reposition the straps to the next higher “hole” as she grows. A super carseat in regards to safety, strap holders, recline, LATCH hookup, etc. Just be wary if you’ll be using it in a cold climate… I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to friends here in Minneapolis. I definitely prefer my Graco ComfortSport with the GracoPedic Foam over this one; the straps are extra long and my daughter seems to like it just as much as the Maxi-Cosi, and I bought it for $80 instead of $200.

The car seat is great, great colors, great design, very confy, but it does not fit my 2 year-old girl. I read the size specs and she is petite but still she did not fit. But I will recommended for smaller children.

    The best car seat

This is the best car seat we have owned. Our daughter loves going for rides and she looks so comfortable. Our last seat was a Greco and it was the worst. What a difference a car seat can make for road trips or errands about town. I am recommending this seat to all my friends. Why waste the time and money on cheap stuff when your little one can ride in so much more comfort and safety. It was worth every penny.

We have been using this car seat for a month, and I would give this car seat a 4.5 stars if I could. Some aspects of it are amazing, but there are a few things that are just passable. First the pros: My son is very comfortable in the seat! He used to wake up right away when he was still in the Graco Safeseat. If he falls asleep in this carseat, he stays asleep even when I take him out of it. I love the material. I detest the hard to clean velour on the Britax seats and other seats. I also love the color designs. I can’t understand why everything is black, grey or brown for the Britax seats! Boys can go in other color too! I also think it is quite sturdy, and my son is very well strapped in and safe. We haven’t used the recline feature, since our son is still rear facing, but it is very nice when I tested it out and easy to use. The cons: This seat is a little difficult to install. I had to pay close attention to the instruction manual to use the locking clip correctly. Make sure you do so and it will be a quick install. Otherwise, you’ll be struggling to get the straps in the clip. Also, the diagrams are a little confusing, making it unclear where the latch straps and tether straps go for storage. Now that I know how to do it, it takes 5 minutes to install the seat. We have already traveled with the seat, and it held up well. There are a few pieces of plastic that might feel a little sharp, and I was a bit disappointed with that, but there are in places that are flat to the seat when installed, so I don’t think a child will touch those areas. Overall, we’re really happy with the seat and plan to get another for our second car. I know some people are really gaga over the 65lb weight limit on the Marathon and other Britax seats, but my son is on the light side and if he stays on his growth curve, he won’t reach 45 pounds until he is 7 or 8. By then, I’m not sure he’ll want to stay in such a bulky “little boy” seat anymore.

Needs a better method for stowing away the unused straps. Like the latch strap. Breast clip needs to have a easier method to release the clip. Hard for grandparents with arthritis.

I love the Maxi-Cosi car seat! It’s very secure and easy to get my 13 month old daughter in and out of the car seat. The only thing that was complicated was installing it into our van. And it does show stains very quickly but it is machine washable. But my daughter falls asleep in it very well and I love the recline feature. Overall great buy for your money.

I recently purchased this car seat for my son. I love it. The recline is my favorite feature. It is super easy to use. When my son falls asleep I can just reach back with one hand and recline him so he rests comfortably. He seems to like it.
